Observation: The facility now features a donair grill and hot plate for frying donair meat in the corner of the restaurant next to the display cooler. The service had not been previously approved and no Food Safety Plan had been submitted.
Corrective Action: Discontinue this food service immediately. The donair grill was shut down at time of inspection.
504   Equipment/utensils/food contact surfaces are operated in a safe/sanitary manner (Sec 16(c))
Observation: The donair grill is operated in the absence of a commercial vent hood, allowing the grease-laden vapours generated by the grill to disperse throughout the premises. The dispersion of grease-laden vapours onto surfaces provides food for bacterial growth in every location it is found and is also an attractant for pests. The extended use of this type of equipment in the premises without ventilation would negatively impact the sanitary state of the premises, regardless of any increase in cleaning.
Corrective Action: The use of the donair grill without approved ventilation is not permitted. The permit for this facility has now been updated to exclude the production of excessive grease laden vapours through cooking.

Comments:

Prior approval must be obtained from this department before any additional menu streams are added (e.g. additional equipment, changes to the type of food produced). A food safety plan for each additional menu stream must be approved.
