Facility Information:
Facility Type: | 301-10000 Connections |
Current Hazard Rating: | Moderate |
This facility is currently under a Water Quality Advisory
Underlying Problems: · Manganese levels exceed the Canadian Drinking Water Quality Guidelines maximum allowable concentration (MAC) of 0.12mg/L. Although not the reason for issuance of the notice, the manganese levels also exceed the Aesthetic Objective of 0.05mg/L. · Manganese is a naturally occurring element found in food, soil, air and in drinking water. It is a necessary mineral for human health, however based on recent research, developmental impairment has been shown in bottle fed infants and young children if there is too high of Manganese ingestion through contaminated drinking water. · An assessment of manganese levels was conducted in 2021 by sampling the source water and representative areas throughout the distribution system. Upon completion, It was determined that manganese levels exceeded the MAC of 0.12mg/L at multiple locations and, as a result, a community advisory would be required. · A health advisory is in now in effect for bottle fed infants.
Steps Taken to Remedy: · Notify impacted users of the Water Quality Advisory (WQA) as per the steps identified within the Emergency Response and Contingency Plan. · Signage to be posted at appropriate physical and online locations and monitored to ensure they remain in place throughout the advisory (i.e. bottle water facilities, fill station, etc.). · Continue to monitor manganese as to the agreed upon conditions set in the water systems permit.
Corrective Actions Remaining: · Consideration of treatment plant options to lower source manganese levels below 0.12mg/L as per the Canadian Drinking Water Quality Guidelines. Lowering of levels below the existing Aesthetic Objective will also assist with distribution maintenance. |
