Facility Information:
Facility Type: | 15-300 Connections |
Current Hazard Rating: | Low |
This facility is currently under a Water Quality Advisory
Underlying Problems: Treatment plant has been upgraded and preliminary test results show effective reduction of manganese, iron, and hardness. Further testing will be required to ensure manganese levels are maintained below the maximum acceptable concentration of 0.12mg/L. Sodium levels are elevated significantly higher than the aesthetic objective. The aesthetic objective for sodium in drinking water is ≤200 mg/L. The taste of drinking water is generally considered offensive at sodium concentrations above the aesthetic objective. Sodium is not considered a toxic element; up to 5 g/day of sodium is consumed by normal adults. Although the average intake of sodium from drinking water is only a small fraction of that consumed in a normal diet, the intake from this source could be significant for persons suffering from hypertension or congestive heart failure who may require a sodium-restricted diet.
Steps Taken to Remedy: Treatment plant upgraded this year to address several chemical/physical parameters of concern. Bacteriological and chemical/physical test restuls have been acceptable with the exception of sodium, which is above the AO of 200mg/L. Do Not Consume notice rescinded. Water Quality Advisory notice distributed to residents. Separate drinking water supply is available to the residents.
Corrective Actions Remaining: A full panel of chemical/physical tests within the next month with satisfactory restuls will be required, followed by testing of manganese and other parameters of concern at an enhanced frequency to ensure continued treatment efficacy. Regular notification to residents of the elevated sodium concentration including the following: Sodium in drinking water is not a health concern for most people but may be an issue for someone with severe hypertension, congestive heart failure or on a sodium-restricted diet. Further, it is recommended that water from a water softener not be given to infants and not be used in the preparation of infant beverages including formula and juice. Water softeners may increase the levels of sodium in drinking water. |
