Observation: A permit to construct this water system was denied by the public health engineer in 2006. The engineer stated at the time that they would require “confirmation that the UV unit is installed with [an intensity] sensor and solenoid shut off valve”. UV units that perform primary disinfection normally require these components to ensure that they deliver a sufficient UV dose to kill pathogens.
Corrective Action: The water supplier will need to provide information showing that the UV unit has: an intensity sensor, a solenoid shut off valve and a flow restrictor. This information may be present in the UV unit manual. If it is not available in the manual, the water treatment company that services the unit may be able to confirm whether these components have been installed.
