Introduction

An unscheduled routine inspection was conducted to assess compliance with the Community Care and Assisted Living Act (CCALA), the Child Care Licensing Regulations (CCLR) and the relevant Director of Licensing Standards of Practice (DLSP). All areas of the facility were inspected for compliance with the exception of the outdoor play area that is maintained by the Burnaby School Board

Observed Violations
PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11020 - CCLR s.13(2) - A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.
Observation: Licensing observed three cabinet doors were coming off their hinges.
Corrective Action(s): Please ensure the facility is in good repair

PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11200 - CCLR s.17 - A licensee must ensure that children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety of a child.
Observation: The following was observed in the facility:

-Custodian rooms in all three classrooms were unlocked. Various chemicals were present.
-2 cans of Shaving cream and laundry detergent were in a covered cupboard on a low shelf. The label on both items read, "keep out of reach of children"
Corrective Action(s): Please ensure children do not have access to any objects or substances that may be hazardous to their health and safety

Comments

At the inspection dated April 14, 2023 there were 17 children, and 3 staff and a Supervisor were present. At this inspection the above noted contraventions were identified. Please correct the above noted contraventions by April 28, 2023 unless otherwise specified in the report. As part of this Routine Inspection a Facility Risk Assessment Tool is completed and a copy was sent to the Manager.

The following was discussed:

-The reportable incident reporting procedure.
-The current cleaning protocols that are in place
-Preventing lead in the water
-Providing access to all of the toilet and sinks in the facility
-Ensuring sufficient space to exit in an emergency

The inspection findings were reviewed with the Supervisor at the inspection as the Manager was away. A copy of these documents were sent to the Manager. If you have any questions regarding this report please contact me.
