Introduction

An unscheduled inspection was conducted to assess compliance with the Community Care and Assisted Living Act (CCALA), the Child Care Licensing Regulations (CCLR) and the relevant Director of Licensing Standards of Practice (DLSP). All areas of the facility were inspected for compliance.

Observed Violations
PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11190 - CCLR s.16(4)(b) - A licensee must ensure that all indoor and outdoor play materials and equipment accessible to children are (b) safely constructed, free from hazards and in good repair.
Observation: Upon inspection of the large playground, there were rusty nails sticking out of the wooden perimeter, rotting wood and a spike exposed that posed a tripping hazard for the children.On the small playground there was a rusty metal slate that was close to where the children glide across.
Corrective Action(s): Please ensure the playgrounds are in good repair.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES: 13020 - CCLR s.22(1)(b) - A licensee must have all of the following: (b) an emergency plan that sets out procedures to prepare for, mitigate, respond to and recover from any emergency.
Observation: When Licensing asked a staff where the fire extinguishers were located, staff did not know.
Corrective Action(s): Please ensure staff are familiar with procedures to prepare for, mitigate and respond to an emergency

MEDICATION: 16080 - CCALA s.7(1)(b)(i) - A licensee must do all of the following: (b) operate the community care facility in a manner that will promote (i) the health, safety and dignity of persons in care,
Observation: Upon inspection of the medication on site, it was expired.
Corrective Action(s): Please ensure children's medication is not expired

Comments

Summary of Inspection
At the inspection dated Oct 2, 2019 there were 15 children and 2 staff present. Staff stated she was unsure how many children registered in the program. At this inspection the above noted contraventions were identified. Licensee will provide a written response to licensing.Licensing will review the response. As part of this Routine Inspection a Facility Risk Assessment Tool is completed and a copy is provided.

Licensing conducted a walk-through of the library and both of the outdoor playgrounds.

The following education/recommendations were provided:
· Promoting Active Play in the program
· Active Supervision
· Lead in the Water
