Introduction

An unscheduled routine inspection was conducted to assess compliance with the Community Care & Assisted Living Act (CCALA), the Child Care Licensing Regulation (CCLR) and the relevant Director of Licensing Standards of Practice (DOLSP). All care categories were inspected for compliance.

Observed Violations
PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11020 - CCLR s.13(2) - A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.
Observation: Latches on the kitchen gate and the entrance gate are not working allowing children access to the kitchen and cubby area. During this inspection staff cleaning products from the kitchen to mitigate the risk of harm to children.
Corrective Action(s): Please ensure that the gate latches are in working order.

PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11160 - CCLR s.16(3)(a) - A licensee must ensure that the entire outdoor play area is (a) enclosed in a manner that is suitable for the age and development of children, and will ensure that children are free of harm.
Observation: Tubing pipes for the in ground irrigation system are exposed posing a tripping hazard.
Corrective Action(s): Please ensure any tubes or pipes from the in ground irrigation system are not accessible to children.

RECORDS AND REPORTING: 19240 - CCLR s.58(1)(c)(ii) - A licensee must keep, for each child requiring extra support, a current care plan showing the following information: (c) the resources to be made available to the child requiring extra support by the licensee, including (ii) any modification to the program of activities necessary to enable the child to participate in or benefit from the program.
Observation: Medication required in a child's care plan expired in February 2021. The manager stated the family is aware of this and has been asked to provide medication with a current expiry date.
Corrective Action(s): Please ensure all medications have a current expiry date.

Summary of Inspection
At the inspection dated May 24, 2022 there were 20 children and four staff present. At this inspection the above noted contraventions were identified. The Licensee will take action to bring the facility into compliance and provide a written response to the Licensing Officer. The Licensing Officer will review the response. As part of this routine inspection, a facility risk assessment tool is completed and a copy is provided. This report was reviewed with the manager and written off site. A copy of this report will be emailed to the manager.
The following were discussed with the manager:
There is no requirement to keep medication in a locked box/cupboard.
