Introduction

An unscheduled routine inspection was conducted to assess compliance with the Community Care and Assisted Living Act (CCALA), the Child Care Licensing Regulations (CCLR) and the relevant Director of Licensing Standards of Practice (DLSP). All areas of the facility were inspected for compliance.

Observed Violations
PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11010 - CCLR s.13(1) - A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.
Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): Licensing observed the phone wire hanging located in the classroom downstairs. The wire was easily accessible to children.
Corrective Action(s): Ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11200 - CCLR s.17 - A licensee must ensure that children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety of a child.
Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): Licensing observed a liquid cleaning solution stored under the sink in the children's upstairs bathroom.
Corrective Action(s): Ensure the liquid cleaning solution is stored in a place not accessible to children.

NUTRITION AND FOOD SERVICES: 17130 - CCALA s.7(1)(b)(i) - A licensee must do all of the following: (b) operate the community care facility in a manner that will promote (i) the health, safety and dignity of persons in care,
Observation: During inspection, Licensing observed two open containers with food stored on the kitchen counter. A staff stated that the food belongs to children.
Corrective Action(s): Ensure food is safely stored.

Comments

At the inspection dated Jan. 17, 2022 there were 15 children and 6 staff present. At this inspection the above noted contraventions were identified. Actions required by the licensee includes a written response. The contraventions noted in this report were reviewed with the facility during the inspection.

A COVID-19 Risk Screening was also completed on-site.

As part of this Routine Inspection a Facility Risk Assessment Tool is completed and a copy is provided.

The following education/recommendations/discussions were provided:
- Reportable Incident procedures
- Continue to document minor incidents using the incident log bound book, and take note of any illness and unexpected events involving children not requiring medical attention, and that are not reportable incidents as described in Schedule H and staff to initial after each documentation
- Website for validating certificates
- Continue to follow COVID-19 policy
- Continue to clean and sanitize the facility including toys and equipment
- Continue hand hygiene procedures
- Continue to have indoor ventilation
- Check the expiry date of items in the emergency supplies kit
- Remove all items with a DIN # in the first aid kit, as parent’s permission is required before using these items on children. Mild soap and water can be used to clean any minor cuts or scrapes.
