Introduction

An unscheduled routine inspection was conducted to assess compliance with the Community Care and Assisted Living Act (CCALA), the Child Care Licensing Regulations (CCLR) and the relevant Director of Licensing Standards of Practice (DLSP). All care categories were inspected for compliance.

Observed Violations
PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11010 - CCLR s.13(1) - A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.
Observation: Licensing observed that in one of the nap rooms, the inside pipe and metal parts of the mounted wall heater was accessible to a child whose sleeping mat was beside it. Part of the cover of the heater located just above the ground was missing. During inspection, it was discussed with a staff and the manager for the child's sleeping mat to be moved away from the heater until it is fixed.
Corrective Action(s): Ensure that a safe environment is always provided to children while under the supervision of employees.

Comments

At the inspection dated Nov. 04, 2022 there were 43 children and 12 staff present.The manager was also on-site and assisted with the inspection. At this inspection, the above noted contravention was identified. Actions required by the licensee includes a written response. The contravention noted in this report was reviewed with the facility during the inspection.

As part of this Routine Inspection a Facility Risk Assessment Tool is completed and a copy is provided.

The following education/recommendations/discussions were provided:
- Continue to document minor incidents using the incident log bound book, and take note of any illness and unexpected events involving children not requiring medical attention, and that are not reportable incidents as described in Schedule H and staff to write the date and initial after each documentation
- Continue to clean and sanitize the facility including toys and equipment
- Continue hand hygiene procedures
- Remove all items with a DIN # in the first aid kit, as parent’s permission is required before using these items on children. Mild soap and water can be used to clean any minor cuts or scrapes.
- Outdoor play area plan and procedures
