Follow up inspection:

Meat department:
-Thermometers were available inside the walk-in-cooler and meat display cooler.
-Broken thermometer from the reach in cooler was removed and replaced with a thermometer in good working order.

Produce department:
-Both light bulbs inside the walk-in-cooler were encased in shatterproof covers to prevent any physical contamination of food upon breakage of the light bulbs.

Self-Serve Kombucha station:

-Management was informed by the district Environmental Health Officer of Fraser Health that the use of refillable used growlers presents a cross-contamination risk at the spout / dispensing head of the Kombucha dispensing equipment as there is a potential of contact to occur between the spout and lip contact surface of the growlers. Currently, Nesters Market does not have health approval for the reusable refillable growers at the self-serve kombucha station and has been informed to allow the use of new single use growlers/containers only.

-Management was directed to post signage at the self-serve kombucha station indicating that that growlers are intended for single use and reusable growlers are not permitted for use and to remove/cover the words "rewash and repeat" on the self-serve kombucha station to prevent misleading information from being provided to customers.

-Another concern observed was that Management mentioned that they do not have the means to dismantle the kombucha tap/facet for warewashing purposes and are able to only sanitize the exterior surfaces of the unit. The supplier of the Spark Kombucha product was unable to comment on when she last cleaned it over telephone to the Manager as well and mentioned that they would check their records and update Management. For this reason, the Store Manager chose to voluntarily remove the self-serve kombucha station from the point of sale and re-located it in the back storage area of the store.

-Please ensure that the food contact surfaces of the self-serve kombucha station are washed, rinsed, sanitized, and air dried in accordance with your sanitation plan (i.e. at least every 4 hours and whenever contamination is possible) to protect the kombucha from contamination.

-If any changes are proposed (in cleaning frequency based on the manufacturer's information and/or the use of reusable growlers), then you must obtain health approval in writing regarding the sanitation plan for the self-serve kombucha unit for those specific procedures from the district Environmental Health Officer of Fraser Health prior to implementing these changes at the retail store level.

-Please ensure you have the means to dismantle and wash, rinse, sanitize, and air dry the food contact surfaces of the kombucha unit in accordance with your sanitation plan and to protect the kombucha from contamination. Contact the district EHO immediately once you have the means to dismantle the kombucha self-serve unit and wash, rinse, sanitize, and air dry it prior to reselling it to customers again.

Feel free to contact the district EHO of Fraser Health if you have any questions and/or concerns (business card was provided).
