Introduction

An unscheduled routine inspection was conducted to assess compliance with the Community Care and Assisted Living Act (CCALA), the Child Care Licensing Regulations (CCLR) and the relevant Director of Licensing Standards of Practice (DLSP). All areas of the facility were inspected for compliance.

Observed Violations
PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11010 - CCLR s.13(1) - A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.
Observation: Upon inspection out the outdoor area, Licensing observed the gate/fence was exposed, posing an entrapment hazard.
Corrective Action(s): The Staff explained that they will work on covering this.

CARE AND/OR SUPERVISION: 14220 - CCLR s.51(1)(a) - A licensee must (a) ensure that behavioural guidance is appropriate to the age and development of the child who is receiving the guidance.
Observation: Upon inspection, Licensing observed a child in a playpen during circle time, located in the play area. The staff explained that this child is also placed in a high chair during circle time for behavioral management.
Corrective Action(s): The Manager explained that a playpen or high chair will no longer be used for behavioural guidance.

HYGIENE AND COMMUNICABLE DISEASE: 15030 - CCLR s.46(1) - A licensee must establish a program to instruct children in, and to practise the rules of, health and hygiene.
Observation: Upon inspection, Licensing observed a child's hands were not washed before or after a meal.
Corrective Action(s): The Staff explained that children's hands are typically washed before mealtimes.

At the inspection dated March 22, 2024 there were 6 children, 1 staff present, and The Manager present. At this inspection the above noted contraventions were identified. Licensee/Manager to provide Licensing with a written response with actions taken to bring facility into compliance. The Licensing Officer will review the response. As part of this Routine Inspection a Facility Risk Assessment Tool will be completed and a copy will be provided.
