Introduction

An unscheduled routine inspection was conducted to assess compliance with the Community Care & Assisted Living Act (CCALA), the Child Care Licensing Regulation (CCLR) and the relevant Director of Licensing Standards of Practice (DOLSP). All areas of the facility were inspected for compliance.

Observed Violations
PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11020 - CCLR s.13(2) - A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.
Observation: During the inspection, Licensing noticed that the diaper changing mat had visible tears along the edges, exposing the foam beneath it. Manager is aware of this and will order a replacement today.
Corrective Action(s): Please make sure that the diapering mat has no tears, is in good repair, and can be sanitized properly.

PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11200 - CCLR s.17 - A licensee must ensure that children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety of a child.
Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): During inspection Licensing observed that diaper cream was within children's reach in the bathroom. Manager made it inaccessible during the inspection.
Corrective Action(s): Ensure children do not have access to diaper creams in the bathroom.

Comments

At the inspection dated February 1, 2024, there were seven children and the manager present. At this inspection the above noted contraventions were identified. Licensing conducted a walk-through of the entire facility. The Manager will take action to bring the facility into compliance and provide a written response to the Licensing Officer by February 5, 2024 stating how the identified contraventions will be addressed to ensure year-round compliance. The Licensing Officer will review the response. As part of this Routine Inspection a Facility Risk Assessment Tool is completed and a copy is provided. Photographs of nap space were taken during the inspection, and a copy will be mailed to the manager.

The following were discussed with the Manager:
Use of sleeping equipment (playpens) for children must adhere to the manufacturer's recommendations and guidelines. Placement of sleeping equipment to prevent children from accessing other children equipment
Nap space dedicated for children use must be maintained regularly. Photographs were taken.
Storage of toys/materials in a manner to ensure that they do not fall on children in the event of an earthquake
Personal use items to be inaccessible to children at all times
Dolsop- Safe spaces -equipment for toddlers must be no more than .9 meters (three feet) in height.

The inspection report was written off-site and details were reviewed with the Manager prior to writing the report. A copy of the follow up to routine inspection report and risk assessment is provided to the manager at this inspection.
