Introduction

An unscheduled routine inspection was conducted to assess compliance with the Community Care & Assisted Living Act (CCALA), the Child Care Licensing Regulation (CCLR) and the relevant Director of Licensing Standards of Practice (DOLSP). All care categories were inspected for compliance.

Observed Violations
PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11020 - CCLR s.13(2) - A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.
Observation: An area of the vinyl surfacing on the covered area of the deck is coming away exposing the wood surface. The wood surface is showing signs of rotting and gives way when stood on. The manager stated children have been playing on this part of the deck as the larger uncovered deck is under repair.
Corrective Action(s): To address this issue the manager stated that children will not play on the covered area of the deck until it is repaired and that the front yard will be cleaned up and children will have outdoor play in the front yard.

PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11200 - CCLR s.17 - A licensee must ensure that children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety of a child.
Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): Hand sanitizer and a bottle of cleaning solution were accessible to children.
Corrective Action(s): The manager removed these items during the inspection.

RECORDS AND REPORTING: 19070 - CCLR s.57(2)(a) - A licensee must keep, for each child, a record showing the following information: (a) name, sex, date of birth, medical insurance plan number and immunization status.
Observation: Files for seven children were reviewed. Immunization status was not available for one child.
Corrective Action(s): The manager will update the child's file to include immunization status.

RECORDS AND REPORTING: 19100 - CCLR s.57(2)(d) - A licensee must keep, for each child, a record showing the following information: (d) name and telephone number of a parent, medical practitioner and emergency contact.
Observation: Files for seven children were reviewed. Contact information for an emergency contact was not available for one child.
Corrective Action(s): The manager will update the child's file to show contact information for an emergency person.

Summary of Inspection
At the inspection dated February 6, 2024 there were six children, the manager and one individual present. At this inspection the above noted contraventions were identified. The Licensee will take action to bring the facility into compliance and provide a written response to the Licensing Officer. The Licensing Officer will review the response. As part of this routine inspection, a facility risk assessment tool is completed and a copy is provided. This report was reviewed with the manager, written on site and a copy will be emailed to the manager.
The following were discussed:
Ensuring written permission is obtained if a parent wants skin/hand lotion applied to their child.
Adding more water to the emergency supply kit.
The following are required before the front yard is used for children's outdoor play:
Remove all rusty and broken toys and equipment.
Remove the lawn mover and all other gardening equipment.
Ensure children do not have access to the pathways at each side of the house.
