Introduction

An unscheduled routine inspection was conducted to assess compliance with the Community Care and Assisted Living Act (CCALA), the Child Care Licensing Regulations (CCLR) and the relevant Director of Licensing Standards of Practice (DLSP). All areas of the facility were inspected for compliance.

Contraventions

Current Inspection - Items reviewed comply with the Act, regulations & standards of practice except for those noted on supplementary pages.

Observed Violations
PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11160 - CCLR s.16(3)(a) - A licensee must ensure that the entire outdoor play area is (a) enclosed in a manner that is suitable for the age and development of children, and will ensure that children are free of harm.
Observation: During the inspection licensing observed the following in the outdoor play area:

-the fence pannels in some areas were rough and in need of painting. This could be a potential splintering/sliver hazard.
Corrective Action(s): Please ensure the outdoor play area is free from harm.

PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11200 - CCLR s.17 - A licensee must ensure that children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety of a child.
Observation: Licensing observed the following inside the facility:
- a kettle filled with boiling water was on a high shelf in the clasroom. The electrical cord was easily accessible to the children. This could cause a potential burning hazard. This was corrected during the inspection.
-6 large shelves were not anchored to the wall. The shelves are more than 4 feet tall. This could cause a potential tipping or falling hazard.

Licensing observed the following outside the facility:
-several screws and hardware on the fence were rusty. This could cause a potential health hazard.
Corrective Action(s): Please ensure children do not have access to any objects or substances that are hazardous to their health.

Comments

At the inspection dated February 14, 2020 there were 10 children and 2 staff and the Manager was present. At this inspection the above noted contraventions were identified. Please address the above noted contraventions. As part of this Routine Inspection a Facility Risk Assessment Tool is completed and a copy is provided.

The following education/recommendations were provided:
· Promoting Active Play in the program
· Temporary Placements
· Active Supervision
