Introduction

An unscheduled routine inspection was conducted to assess compliance with the Community Care & Assisted Living Act (CCALA), the Child Care Licensing Regulation (CCLR) and the relevant Director of Licensing Standards of Practice (DOLSP). All areas of the facility were inspected for compliance.

Observed Violations
PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11010 - CCLR s.13(1) - A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.
Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): During inspection Licensing observed that contents of two drawers and one cupboard in the kitchen area were accessible to children. Manager corrected this during inspection.
Corrective Action(s): Licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11080 - CCLR s.15(1)(a) - A licensee must supply equipment, furniture and supplies that are (a) of sturdy and safe construction, easy to clean and free from hazards.
Observation: Some of the mats used for sleeping have torn edges and cannot be sanitized effectively.
Corrective Action(s): Ensure all nap equipment and furnishings are in good repair and can be sanitized effectively.

Comments

At the inspection dated July 5, 2023 there were seven children and the Manager present. At this inspection the above noted contraventions were identified. Licensing conducted a walk-through of the entire facility. The Manager will take action to bring the facility into compliance and provide a written response to the Licensing Officer by July 7, 2023. The Licensing Officer will review the response. As part of this Routine Inspection a Facility Risk Assessment Tool is completed and a copy is provided.

The following were discussed with the Manager:
Emergency medication must be inaccessible to children.
Annual servicing of fire extinguishers
Regular monitoring of fluctuating heat temperatures indoor & outdoors to mitigate effects of high temperatures on children
During field trips photographs & emergency contact information of children are stored on a cell phone. It is recommended that hard copies of this information are available in case the cell phone does not work.

The inspection report was written off-site and details were reviewed with the Manager prior to writing the report. A copy of the follow up to routine inspection report and risk assessment is provided to the manager on July 5, 2023.
