Introduction

An unscheduled routine inspection was conducted to assess compliance with the Community Care and Assisted Living Act (CCALA), the Child Care Licensing Regulations (CCLR) and the relevant Director of Licensing Standards of Practice (DLSP). All care categories were inspected for compliance.

Observed Violations
PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11010 - CCLR s.13(1) - A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.
Observation: A shelf inside the facility was over 4 feet tall. The shelf was unsteady. This could present a potential falling hazard. Outside in the play area a shelf was next to the fence. The shelf could present a climbing hazard as a child could potentially climb the shelf and climb over the fence and leave the child care facility.
Corrective Action(s): Please ensure a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times.

PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11020 - CCLR s.13(2) - A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.
Observation: The washroom cupboards are showing signs of wear and have water damage. The Licensee temporarily fixed the cupboard with a temporary solution and is in search of a new vanity that will fit the space. This is a repeat contravention from inspection

PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11200 - CCLR s.17 - A licensee must ensure that children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety of a child.
Observation: Licensing observed several sharp knives in the drying rack. This was located at the children's level. The knives were pointing downwards. This was corrected immediately.
Corrective Action(s): Please ensure children do not have access to any objects or substances that are harmful to their health and safety.

Comments

At the inspection dated February 3, 2022 there were 5 children, and the Licensee and 1 staff was present. At this inspection the above noted contraventions were identified. Please correct the above noted contraventions by February 17, 2022 unless otherwise specified in the report. As part of this Routine Inspection a Facility Risk Assessment Tool is completed and a copy was sent to the Manager.

The following education/recommendations were provided:

-The reportable incident reporting procedure.
-The current COVID-19 protocols that are in place
- The nap room was changed to a new location, please submit new floor plans to reflect this change.
-The contents in the first aid kit was reviewed. Licensing recommends the complete first aid kit be used when the children are in the outdoor play area or off-site.

The inspection findings were reviewed with the Licensee at the inspection. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the inspection report and the risk assessment were completed at the Burnaby FHA office.
