Introduction

An unscheduled inspection was conducted to assess compliance with the Community Care and Assisted Living Act (CCALA), the Child Care Licensing Regulation (CCLR) and the relevant Director of Licensing Standards of Practice (DOLSP). All areas of the facility were inspected for compliance, with the exception of the away outdoor play space.

Observed Violations
PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11200 - CCLR s.17 - A licensee must ensure that children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety of a child.
Observation: Licensing observed plastic bags in a cupboard under the sink accessible to children in care. There is a gate blocking access to the kitchen area, however it was not closed. Staff educated it is usually a regular practice to ensure the gates are closed when the children are awake.
Corrective Action(s): Please ensure children to not have access to any object that may be hazardous to their health or safety.

RECORDS AND REPORTING: 19090 - CCLR s.57(2)(c) - A licensee must keep, for each child, a record showing the following information: (c) daily attendance record, indicating for each day whether the child is absent or, if the child is present, the time of arrival and departure.
Observation: Licensing reviewed 8 attendance records and noted 10 children were not signed out.
Corrective Action(s): Please ensure the attendance records indicate arrival and departure times when the child is present.

Comments

At this inspection dated February 10, 2020, there were 43 children, 8 staff and the administrator present. At this inspection, the above noted contraventions were identified.
The following was discussed:
- The practice of using soap and water for cleaning cuts or scrapes
- Staffing ratios
As part of the routine inspection, a Facility Risk Assessment Tool is completed and a copy is provided.
