Introduction

An unscheduled follow-up inspection to routine inspection #SHUN-CEXRP6 was conducted. Areas of non-compliance identified at the last routine inspection were inspected for compliance. Additionally, Licensing inspected the entire facility due to the risk level of the facility.

Observed Violations
PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11010 - CCLR s.13(1) - A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.
Observation: Licensing observed the following that are accessible to children;
- A dirty mop in one of the Group Child Care (under 36 months) program.
- Two plungers in two different stalls in the Group Child Care (30 mnths to SA) program.
- A dirty bandage in the Group Child Care (30 mnths to SA) playground.
- An adult shovel, rake and rat box in the walkway to both the playgrounds.
Corrective Action(s): Ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are in care.
Date to be Corrected: August 15, 2022.

PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11190 - CCLR s.16(4)(b) - A licensee must ensure that all indoor and outdoor play materials and equipment accessible to children are (b) safely constructed, free from hazards and in good repair.
Observation: Licensing observed the ladder on the wooden climber and slide structure has anti-slip covering, as the wooden ladder gets slipper when wet. However, the anti-slip covering on the first step has come off causing the step to be slippery when wet.
Potential for a child to slip, fall and hurt themselves.
Corrective Action(s): Ensure that all indoor and outdoor play materials and equipment accessible to children are safely constructed, free from hazards and in good repair.

Comments

Summary of Inspection
At the follow-up inspection conducted on August 10, 2022 there were 46 children, 12 staff, 1 practicum student, 1 volunteer and the previous Manager present. A practicum student accompanied Licensing at this inspection.The Licensee has addressed all previously identified contraventions except the ones noted in the violation section. The Licensee is required to correct all identified non-compliances by the dates indicated above in the violations section. A written response is to be provided to Licensing on the date specified for Licensing to review that appropriate corrective action has been taken to address all identified non-compliances.
The following education/recommendations were provided:
Playground checks should be conducted. Licensing suggested having a system in place to ensure that checks are conducted and communicated.

Education provided on what constitutes as an absent employee.
Ensuring that minor incidents are recorded in the minor incident log book.
The contents of the inspection report was reviewed with the previous Manager at the time of the inspection. This report was written off site due to Covid-19 to help promote health and hygiene. A copy of this report was emailed to the facility.
