Richmond Health District
The Richmond City Department of Public Health Environmental Health Division provides services in several program areas such as food sanitation, rabies control, West Nile Virus surveillance, environmental nuisances and complaints for a city of approximately 200,000 residents.
The Environmental Health Division staff is comprised of eight (8) environmental health inspectors, one (1) supervisor, one (1) office service assistant, and one (1) program manager.
The Division regulates and permits over 1400 various establishments throughout the city. In 2002, the Richmond City Department of Public Health issued over 500 temporary permits for special events, collected over 800 dead birds for West Nile Virus testing, and quarantined 232 dogs and cats for possible rabies exposure.
