Portsmouth Health District

The Portsmouth Health District is a large urban district. It provides environmental health services for a population of 100,000 through a cooperative agreement with the City of Portsmouth and the Virginia Department of Health. The Environmental Health staff is located at 1701 High Street in Portsmouth. The staff consists of an Environmental Health Manager, three Environmental Health Specialists and an Administrative and Office Specialist.

The Environmental Health staff is responsible for regulating both state and local food codes that encompass approximately 380 food facilities. The inspections of those food facilities regulated under the Board of Health’s Food Regulations can be found on this site.

Food facilities are scheduled for routine inspections on a frequency based on the Department of Health's risk assessment guidelines that evaluates food establishments’ menus and food preparation procedures to determine the frequency and nature of food protection services. Additional inspections may be required based on violations noted, critical violations or on consumer complaints received.
