Loudoun Health District
The Loudoun County Health Department’s Environmental Health Urban Division manages environmental health issues associated with areas of increased population density, such as food protection, vector control, communicable disease surveillance, recreational safety, and nuisance problems. The food protection activity encompasses a multi-faceted approach to eliminating foodborne disease in permitted faculties. This approach involves routine inspections, prompt investigation of consumer complaints (with allegations of foodborne illness as top priority), and mandatory plan review for all new and remodeled establishments.
The division permits and inspects food service establishments which include restaurants, caterers, mobile food units, schools, child care, assisted living facilities, hospitals, bed & breakfast, etc. Inspections are unannounced, and are conducted by Environmental Health Specialists who are highly trained public health professionals.
There are approximately 800 food facilities in Loudoun County, each receiving at least two unannounced routine inspections per year. During these inspections specialists focus on food temperatures, food preparation practices, worker hygiene, dishwashing and sanitizing, equipment, and facility cleanliness Follow-up inspections are conducted in any facility where a public health risk is identified.
In 2002, the division conducted approximately 1700 routine inspections, 300 follow-up inspections in facilities where serious food safety violations were found, and investigated 150 consumer complaints.
The results of this year’s food facilities inspections are displayed here.
