Central Virginia Health District

The Central Virginia Health District is headquartered in Lynchburg and serves the cities of Lynchburg and Bedford, as well as Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford and Campbell Counties. The district encompasses an area of 2,123 square miles and includes a population of approximately 229,000. In addition to the main office in Lynchburg, the Central Virginia Health District has offices in the towns of Amherst, Appomattox and Rustburg and in the City of Bedford.

The environmental health program in the district regulates over 800 food service establishments, as well as the many temporary food vendors who serve food at fairs and other special events. Our food safety program seeks to accomplish its mission of public health protection by requiring food service operations to meet specific standards, by routine evaluation of food service operations for compliance with state regulations, and by providing educational opportunities to the staff and management of food service establishments. Each establishment receives one to three routine inspections every year, depending on the complexity of the food preparation process in the establishment. Additional inspections are conducted when necessary to investigate complaints and to ensure that significant violations of the state regulations are corrected in a timely manner.

In addition to the food safety program, the district environmental health staff conducts programs for milk plant sanitation, rabies prevention, onsite sewage disposal (septic systems), private water supplies, and lead poisoning prevention, among others.
