Facility Information:
Facility Type:  15-300 Connections
Current Hazard Rating:   Unknown

This facility is currently under a Do Not Consume

Underlying Problems: Levels of arsenic in the well water exceed the Maximum Allowable Concentration (MAC) indicated in the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality. The Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines provides MAC of 0.01 mg/L for arsenic in drinking water supplies. Chemical analysis of deep well water, collected Nov. 17, 2023, identified arsenic levels of 0.015 mg/L.
Steps Taken to Remedy: Environmental Health Officer (EHO) spoke with the operator and discussed the chemical sample results and confirmed that operator will be providing hauled or bottled water for the Pitka Bay Resort water users. EHO has provided the operator help with drafting public communication to be sent out to the water users.
Corrective Actions Remaining: Operator to notify Pitka Bay Resort water system users that well water is unsafe for consumption. Operator to post "Do Not Consume" notices at accessible public faucets and inform guests about non-potable water when renting motel or RV sites. Do Not Consume notice will remain in effect until proper treatment has been installed on the water system that can reduce the level of total arsenic below the Maximum Acceptable Concentration (MAC). If hauled water to be used as a temporary measure and a cistern is to be installed, apply for the construction permit and operating permit separately. Hire a treatment specialist to assess the water system and propose an effective treatment method. Obtain a Construction Permit from Northern Health before treatment installation. Once effective treatment has been installed submit pre-treatment and post-treatment samples showing arsenic levels below MAC.
