Introduction

An unscheduled routine inspection was conducted to assess compliance with the Community Care and Assisted Living Act (CCALA), the Child Care Licensing Regulations (CCLR) and the relevant Director of Licensing Standards of Practice (DLSP). All areas of the facility were inspected for compliance.

Observed Violations
PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11010 - CCLR s.13(1) - A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.
Observation: portable heaters located on the floor and accessible to children. the heaters were in use and hot to the touch.
Corrective Action(s): please ensure children do not have access to the heaters while in use to prevent risk of scalding.

STAFFING: 12190 - CCLR s.22(2)(b) - A licensee must ensure that each employee (b) practices implementing the fire drill system at least once each month.
Observation: Fire drill records could not be located in one program for 2021 , A record of January drill not documented.
Corrective Action(s): Please ensure each program practices monthly fire drills in order to ensure staff and children are familiar with evacuation procedures.

MEDICATION: 16030 - CCLR s.53(2)(a) - A licensee must ensure that a child's medication is not accessible to any child, except that a child may have access to his or her own medication if (a) the child's parent has instructed the licensee to permit this.
Observation: Medication stored within a backpack which is located in the cubby area
Corrective Action(s): ensure medication remains inaccessible to children to prevent risk of health and safety.It is noted that children were observed to be well supervised at all times through out the inspection.

Comments

At the inspection dated Feb 9, 2021 there were 40 children and 9 staff present. At this inspection the above noted contraventions were identified.Written response to be provided within the assigned time frame, once received Licensing to review and reply with any further information. During the inspection supervising staff provided details on the steps taken to increase monitoring of added health and hygiene measures.
In practicing Covid-19 precautions the inspection report was completed off site with arrangements made for delivery, therefore unsigned. As part of this Routine Inspection a Facility Risk Assessment Tool is completed and a copy is provided.
