Introduction

An unscheduled inspection was conducted to assess compliance with the Community Care and Assisted Living Act (CCALA), the Child Care Licensing Regulations (CCLR) and the relevant Director of Licensing Standards of Practice (DLSP). All care categories were inspected for compliance.
The purpose of today's inspection is to conduct a follow up inspection to ensure compliance with the CCALA and CCLR
A walk through of the indoor and outdoor space took place today

Current Inspection - Items reviewed comply with the Act, regulations & standards of practice except for those noted on supplementary pages.

Observed Violations
PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11010 - CCLR s.13(1) - A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.
Observation: During a walkthrough of the outdoor space the following was noted:
-sloped stair on the infant/toddler stairs leading from the upper deck to the ground which could cause a child to fall
-gaps on wood where small fingers could be pinched or received splinters
-equipment placed over top of hazards as a temporary solution to prevent children from accessing unhealthy/unsafe products within the play space
Corrective Action(s): Please ensure the outdoor environment is healthy and safe for all children in care

PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11020 - CCLR s.13(2) - A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.
Observation: A walk through of the outdoor play space revealed the following equipment is in disrepair:
-tile on 3/5 playground lifting and causing a tripping hazard
-wood on play house is showing signs of rot
-mast on 'boat' showing signs of rot, and is not secure
-concrete around edge of rubber mats at north and south ends of playground is lifting presenting as a trip hazard
-large pools of standing water are forming on the rubber mat
-hardy board around the bottom edge of the northwest corner of the outside deck is broken and has jagged edges
-storage shed is showing signs of rot, nails exposed
-wood trim around edge of sandbox is showing signs of rot
Corrective Action(s): Please ensure facility is in good repair to ensure the health, safety and dignity of the children in care

PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11200 - CCLR s.17 - A licensee must ensure that children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety of a child.
Observation: During a walk through of the outdoor play space the following substance were observed that may be hazardous to children in care:
-asphalt around the rubber matting on the infant/toddler side of the playground is crumbling and is small enough to be ingested
-nut trees overgrown which could cause potential allergic reaction
-Norway maple tree accessible to children which can be toxic to children
Corrective Action(s): Ensure all hazardous items/substances are removed or repaired

Comments

At the inspection dated August 30, 2023 there were 18 children and 5 staff present.
At this inspection the above noted contravention were identified. The Licensee/Manager will take action to bring the facility into compliance and provide a written response to the Licensing Officer. The Licensing Officer will review the response.

Previously coded violations have been suitably addressed at this time
Contraventions noted today are not related to the annual routine inspection
