Introduction

A unscheduled routine inspection was conducted to assess compliance with the Community Care and Assisted Living Act, Child Care Licensing Regulation and any applicable Director of Licensing Standards of Practice. All areas of the facility were inspected for compliance.

Observed Violations
PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11020 - CCLR s.13(2) - A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.
Observation: The Licensee has commenced patching the walls in the main activity area that were chipped or had exposed gyproc. These areas are now porous and must be sealed (ie: paint) in order for them to be cleaned and sanitized.
Corrective Action(s): The Licensee stated she is planning on painting the areas in the near future.

PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11200 - CCLR s.17 - A licensee must ensure that children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety of a child.
Observation: Licensing observed several ant traps located on the floor of the main activity room.
Corrective Action(s): While children are in care the ant traps must be removed as the manufacturer has stated these items are to be kept out of reach of children.

STAFFING: 12200 - CCLR s.22(2)(c) - A licensee must ensure that each employee (c) practices implementing the emergency plan at least once each year.
Observation: In discussion with the Licensee annual emergency drills have not been conducted. This type of evacuation drill is different from the fire drills and could include earthquakes, chemical spills, lock down etc.
Corrective Action(s): Ensure a emergency drill is practiced and recorded on an annual basis.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES: 13020 - CCLR s.22(1)(b) - A licensee must: (b) have an emergency plan that sets out procedures to prepare for, mitigate, respond to and recover from any emergency.
Observation: Fire Extinguisher has not been serviced annually however it was fully charged.
Corrective Action(s): Have the fire extinguisher serviced and tagged.

Comments

At the inspection of September 15, 2021 there were no children in care and the Licensee was present. At this inspection the above noted contraventions were identified and any action required by the Licensee is included. As part of this routine inspection a Facility Risk Assessment Tool is completed and a copy is provided.
Licensing discussed with the Licensee and recommended:
monthly fire drills be conducted at various times throughout the day and
families place an ice pack in their child's lunch if there are perishables, such as dairy or protein, if the food is not in a thermos.
