211 - Semi critical items not adequately cleaned and disinfected
Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): High level disinfectant is not being used to properly disinfect semi critical nail implements. Disinfectant has expired. Disinfectant has a 14 day re-use and it has been 19 days since last change. Evaporation has occurred and implements are not being immersed in liquid.
Corrective Action(s): No other high level disinfectant on site but chlorine bleach is available. Chlorine bleach can be used to make a high level disinfectant of 5000ppm (use 32mL of bleach in 250mL of water OR 2 tbsp bleach in 1 cup of water and make fresh solution each day). Wash items, soak for 10 minutes in chlorine solution, rinse and dry implements. Do not mix chemicals. Follow directions for safe and proper use of all chemicals.

2. Clean room to be used for eyelash extensions between uses.
3. Do not keep eyelash items near waxing items - use a separate cabinet. Show how you will keep this area clean.
4. Provide written procedures on how you are cleaning and disinfecting items used for eyelash extensions (infection control plan).
5. Eyelash glue to have proper Health Canada labelling.

Comments

Routine inspection.
Services provided: Nails (manicure, pedicure, foot bath, acrylic and gel nails) and Esthetics (waxing, eyebrow/lash tints).
Not approved for eyelash extensions but eyelash extensions are being offered - see below.
Nails:
- Critical items (razor blade) - pedicure blades are single use - discarded into sharps container after use. Do NOT store blade in handle as it cannot be determined if the blade has already been used.
- Semi critical items (cuticle nippers, metal cuticle pushers, nail clippers, metal files, metal callus rasp/foot file, etc.) are being washed after use. High level disinfectant is old (19 days and most has evaporated) and the implements are not being immersed in disinfectant. Disinfectant expiry date Dec 2022. New disinfectant not available. See above. Use chlorine (31mL of domestic bleach in 250 mL water or 2 tbsp bleach in 1 cup of water made new every day).
- Foot bath - single use plastic liner used. Discard plastic liner and disinfect basin after each client (not reviewed today)- see your infection control plan.
- Non critical items (single use) - Disposable callus pads, nail files, buffers, sanding bands used on artificial nails, and foam sandles are available. Some absorbent nail files, sanding bands, foam buffers, and toe separators appear to be used. See above.
Esthetics:
Waxing
- Tweezers - are covered in wax and hair. See above.
- Single use (disposable) waxing strips and wooden spatula wax applicator.
Eyebrow and eyelash tints
- Use a high level disinfectant for disinfecting the glass cup used to mix color tints (not observed today).
- Tints are labelled for use on eyelashes and brows and "for professional use only".
Eyelash Extensions:
*** Not previously approved for eyelash extension services.
- For eyelash extensions, room used hand washing must be close to treatment area - ok as hand sink is in room.
- Room used for eyelash extensions is to be separate from incompatible services - keep waxing items away from eyelash extension items (today, eyelashe tweezers and other items are stored on hand washing sink counter (requires cleanig) and items are near waxing items.
- Glue labelling - packaging and label are available for review regarding Health Canada labelling.
- Provide copy of training certificate. Only those trained can provide this service.
***Update your infection control plan to show how items used for eyelash extensions are cleaned and disinfected. Show how you will protect clean room and protect eyelashes and implements (scissors, tweezers, mascara wand, etc.).
General:
Hand washing sinks in main nail area and in waxing room have hot/cold water, liquid soap, and paper towels in dispensers (or single use hand towels.
Follow directions on label for all chemicals for safe and proper use. Do not mix chemicals.
Use hot dry for drying laundry (towels and sheets).
Washroom - sink in washroom has liquid soap and paper towels.
*** Verify that hand sink in washroom has hot water (cold only available during inspection).
Cleaning - see above.
Pest control - monitoring traps used. *** Seal any holes where pests may enter salon.
