308 - Equipment/utensils/food contact surfaces are not in good working order [s. 16(b)]
Observation: 1. Hose was disconnected from the sanitizer bottle at the three compartment sink. Staff member manually held the hose to dispense sanitizer into the third compartment sink and a leak was observed at the hose.
2. Paper towel dispenser was not in good working order in the women's washroom at the time of inspection. Note: Paper towel roll was available on the dispenser. Paper towel dispenser is located quite closely behind the panini grill near the handsink in the front area. Staff member were observed using a second wet paper towel roll at the counter to dry their hands during the inspection.
Corrective Action(s): 1. Repair or replace the hose so that the sanitizer can be readily dispensed into the third compartment sink and so that there is no leak; Correct within 2 weeks and contact the district Environmental Health Officer for a follow up inspection.
2. Repair or replace the paper towel dispenser in the women's washroom so that it is in good working order and so that paper towels can be dispensed through it; Correct within 1 week.
Recommended: Re-position the paper towel dispenser or panani grill so that the paper towels are easily accessible from the dispenser.

502 - In operator’s absence, no staff on duty has FOODSAFE Level 1 or equivalent [s. 10(2)]
Observation: Two staff members were working on shift and did not have their FOODSAFE Level 1 certificates with them. District E.H.O. checked the provincial database system which indicated that only one staff member previously had a FOODSAFE Level 1 certificate which expired on July 29, 2018.
Corrective Action(s): Make sure at least one employee per shift maintains valid FOODSAFE Level 1 or equivalent course training; Correct immediately. It was discussed with the staff member that they will need to retake the full FOODSAFE Level 1 course and pass it to renew their FOODSAFE Level 1 certificate. Prior to January 15, 2019, they would be eligible to enroll into the FOODSAFE Level 1 refresher course. Refer to www.FOODSAFE.ca for details. Provide the district E.H.O. an update regarding the renewed FOODSAFE Level 1 certificate status.

Comments

Two handsinks near the food preparation/handling areas and both handsinks inside the customer washrooms were supplied with liquid soap, hot and cold running water, and paper towels.
Staff were observed washing their hands after handling money and after taking a lunch break.
Refrigeration units were at or below 4 degrees C (40 degrees F).
Walk-in-freezer was at or below -18 degrees C (0 degrees F).
Hot-held food (meatballs, soup, and chicken) were at or above 60 degrees C (140 degrees F). Reminder: Make sure these foods are heated (in the microwave) to at least 74 degrees C (165 degrees F) prior to hot-holding them at or above 60 degrees C (140 degrees F) in the hot-holding unit.
200 ppm QUATS sanitizer was available in the bucket in the front area and from the dispenser in the third compartment sink after the staff member manually connected the hose to the dispenser and held it in place.
No signs of recent pest activity were present at the time of inspection.
