Introduction

An unscheduled Routine Inspection was conducted to assess compliance with the Community Care and Assisted Living Act (CCALA), the Child Care Licensing Regulations (CCLR) and the relevant Director of Licensing Standards of Practice (DLSP).

Current Inspection - Items reviewed comply with the Act, regulations & standards of practice except for those noted on supplementary pages.

Observed Violations
PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11200 - CCLR s.17 - A licensee must ensure that children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety of a child.
Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): During the inspection, licensing observed the cabinet that contains various cleaning supplies was unlatched, and accessible to children in care.
Corrective Action(s): Please ensure that children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety of children.

STAFFING: 12050 - CCLR s.19(1)(b) - A licensee must not employ a person in a community care facility unless the licensee or, in the case of a person who is not the manager, the manager has first met with the person and obtained all of the following: (b) character references in respect of the person.
Observation: Licensing reviewed three employee files. One file did not contain evidence that the character references had been obtained.
Corrective Action(s): Please ensure to obtain record that character references had been obtained.

RECORDS AND REPORTING: 19050 - CCLR s.56(1)(f) - A licensee must keep current records of each of the following: (f) a log of minor accidents, illnesses and unexpected events involving children, that did not require medical attention and were not reportable incidents described in Schedule H.
Observation: Log of a recent unexpected event had not been entered into the minor log book. Staff provided a copy of an email communication with parent of one child that was involved in the minor incident.
Corrective Action(s): Please ensure to keep current record of a minor accidents, illnesses, and unexpected events involving children that did not require medical attention and were not reportable incidents described in Schedule H.

Summary of Inspection:
During today’s inspection, there were 15 children, and 2 staff on site.
At this inspection the above noted contravention was identified. Licensee is required to submit a corrective action plan to address the contravention.

The following was discussed:
Reviewed active supervision planning.
Discussed development of care plans.
Discussed the storage of items in the corner area. Staff are working with the school to reduce and remove the items.
