Introduction

An unscheduled routine inspection was conducted to assess compliance with the Community Care and Assisted Living Act (CCALA), the Child Care Licensing Regulations (CCLR) and the relevant Director of Licensing Standards of Practice (DOLSOP). All areas of the facility were inspected for compliance.

Observed Violations
PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11400 - DLSOP Safe Play Space (ground surfacing [b5]) - [bullet 5] A 1.8 metre (six feet) clearance around equipment is considered safest.
Observation: New protective surface has been installed around the slide/climbing equipment but the landing area in front of the slide provides aclearance of 45 inches. The protective surfacing of rubber material is framed by wood and there is potential risk of injury from the wooden frame. Also there is not suficient clearance on the side with a blue metal steps.
Corrective Action(s): As discussed, please refer to the Director of Licensing Standard of Practice for Safe Play Space design and ensure area surrounding the play structure fall zones does not pose a risk of injury.

Comments

On the inspection date of January 21, 2020 there were 6 children in care with one staff. The Manager was also present for part of the inspection. At this inspection the above contravention was noted. Actions required by the licensee include a corrective action plan to be submitted and actions required by the LO include reviewing the corrective action plan. As part of this Routine Inspection a Facility Risk Assessment Tool is completed and a copy is provided.
The following education/recommendations were provided:
Promoting Active Play in the program, and safety practice when off site play areas are used
Reportable Incident notification including notification to Duty Licensing Officer
