Introduction

An unscheduled routine inspection was conducted to assess compliance with the Community Care and Assisted Living Act (CCALA), the Child Care Licensing Regulations (CCLR) and the relevant Director of Licensing Standards of Practice (DLSP). All areas of the facility were inspected for compliance.

Contraventions
Previous Inspection - Contraventions observed on FIR #DCAR-BA32H2 have been corrected.
Current Inspection - Items reviewed comply with the Act, regulations & standards of practice except for those noted on supplementary pages.

Observed Violations
PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11200 - CCLR s.17 - A licensee must ensure that children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety of a child.
Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): Licensing observed the following:
- A serrated kitchen knife was observed in an unlocked kitchen drawer that was at child height.
- Small hooks that pose a choking hazard were noted in the bottom drawer of a shelving unit in the children’s play space.
Upon discussion, Licensee took action to remove hazardous items and make them inaccessible for children in care. No children were in care during the time inspection.
Corrective Action(s): Ensure that children do not have accesss to object or substance that may be hazardous to the health and safety of a child.
Date to be Corrected: January 20, 2020.


Comments

- At the inspection dated January 20, 2020 there were no children in care. The licensee was present and the inspection continued.
- Although a thorough check of the outdoor play space could not be conducted due to recent snowfall, the space looked to be in good repair. Licensee has systems in place to ensure that outdoor play space is healthy and safe for children in care.
- This report was written off site and the contents of the report were discussed with the licensee during inspection.
- There were two licensing officers present during the inspection for the purpose of training.
- At this inspection the above noted contraventions were identified.
- Licensee to provide a written response by February 3, 2020 including how areas found to be in non compliance have been addressed. Licensing will respond to acknowledge receipt.
- As part of this Routine Inspection a Facility Risk Assessment Tool is completed and a copy was provided.
