Introduction

An unscheduled routine inspection was conducted to assess compliance with the Community Care and Assisted Living Act (CCALA), and the Child Care Licensing Regulations (CCLR), and the Director of Licensing Standards of Practice (DoLSoP). All care categories were inspected for compliance.

Observed Violations
PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11010 - CCLR s.13(1) - A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.
Observation: Observed:
-2 storage cabinets inside, and one outside were unanchored to the wall in a manner that prevents them from falling. One shelf was anchored with a screw, however the screw has become loose over time.
-One play mailbox toy was chipping and broken. Licensee removed the toy from play during inspection.
Corrective Action(s): Please ensure that tall shelving is anchored, and any toys are removed from play once they are broken.

STAFFING: 12140 - CCLR s.19(4)(a) - A licensee must not employ a person in a community care facility as (a) an educator or an assistant unless the person holds a certificate issued under Division 2 [Employee Qualifications], which must be verified by the system maintained by the early childhood educator registry. (Educator or assistant certificate validation)
Observation: One facility file was reviewed, and file contained no verification for the early childhood educator certificate. Licensee completed verification during inspection.
Corrective Action(s): Please ensure to keep on file a certificate issued under Division 2 [Employee Qualifications], which must be verified by the system maintained by the early childhood educator registry. (Educator or assistant certificate validation)

Summary of Inspection:
During today’s inspection, there were 6 children, and the facility licensee.
At this inspection the above noted contraventions were identified. Licensee is required to submit a corrective action plan to address the contraventions.

The following was discussed:
Licensing observed the licensee had patched two small areas on the wall and had plans for painting them. The areas were not easily accessible to children.
Reviewed the three sink dishwashing method with the licensee.
Discussion of diaper storage located at the exit to playground. Licensee stated they ensure this bucket is dumped prior to the use of the play space. Licensee asked that the container be covered and made inaccessible to children.
